Safety Planning with Adolescents

PRESENTED BY Ashley McGurkin, LCSW and Ellen Herbert, LSCW

2 CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITs

BASE is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. BASE maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

DESCRIPTION

Rates of suicidal thoughts and non-suicidal self-injurious behavior continue to rise in teenagers (CDC; & Grandclerc et al., 2016). These days, if you work with teens, you work with these issues; yet many therapists lack the comfort and expertise necessary to address these concerns (Ahmed et al., 2021) while continuing to move their client’s treatment forward. Beyond the already fraught circumstances involved in responding to any client’s mental health crisis, with adolescent clients, the clinician must also navigate additional layers of clinical and ethical issues around confidentiality and family involvement.

This training seeks to close the gap between clinicians’ preparedness and the needs of our teenage clients. During this presentation, we’ll identify key indicators of the need for safety planning in the adolescent population and review evidence-based and experientially proven methods of engaging your client and their family in safety planning for best outcomes (Abbott-Smith, et al., 2023; Steele et al., 2018). Further, we’ll explore the impact of safety planning measures on the therapeutic relationship and provide interventions to determine the function of SI and/or NSSI. Utilizing these methods, we’ll reframe a risk assessment from a pause in treatment or even a setback, to an opportunity to further your rapport and connection with your client and to gain both insights and motivation which will propel treatment forward.
