Session 1: We will cover the essentials of sleep, and deepen understanding of what creates insomnia. We will discuss unique differences in people with insomnia, and start to establish treatment intervention.

Session 2: We will go in depth into circadian rhythm and some of the ways that our internal clock system can interfere with our sleep.

Session 3: We will cover the effects of stress on our sleep system, and develop specific intervention to help our bodies and minds tolerate sleep.

Session 4: We will discuss sleep medications, how they work, why they are used, and how we develop strategies to eliminate medications for sleep. Clients will be able to review some of their past medication usage, and determine the risks and benefits of sleep medicines.

Session 5: We will discuss some of the more complex challenges with thoughts related to sleep, and the way that wakefulness can persist during the night. We will develop specific intervention strategies for the various causes of nocturnal awakenings or problems falling asleep.

Session 6: The information from the prior 5 sessions will be synthesized into the essential elements required for sustaining healthy sleep for the long term. Clients who are working off of medications can verify their taper strategies. We will discuss how to prevent relapse into insomnia.
