Supporting Families of LGBTQIA+ Youth

Presented by Holly Savoy Ph.D. and Eileen Geiger LCMHCA

2 CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

BASE is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. BASE maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to present practitioners with a deeper understanding of the role of attachment theory and therapy in supporting families. Research shows that parental support has significant implications for the mental health of LGBTQIA+ youth (McCurdy & Russell, 2023; SAMHSA, 2014). Additionally, experiences of discrimination, harassment, and lack of acceptance by others has negative implications for the mental health of LGBTQIA+ youth (Meyer, 2003; The Trevor Project, n.d.). Attachment theory provides a framework for understanding and exploring the challenges and opportunities faced by practitioners in working with families of LGBTQIA+ youth (Kozlowska, 2021). Through interactive discussions, case studies, and practical strategies, attendees will learn effective approaches to foster positive relationships, support family acceptance, and create inclusive environments for LGBTQ youth and their families.
