Recognizing, Referring and Treating Intimate Partner Abuse/Abusers

Presented by Bea Cote, LCSW, LMFT

2 CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

BASE is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. BASE maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

DESCRIPTION

As the relatively new field of practice and research about the perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence/Abuse continues to evolve (Niolon et al., 2017), we are discovering, confirming, and disproving links between mental illness, emotional stressors, and the perpetration of what is commonly known as domestic violence.

In this program you will hear from someone who has worked with these abusive men for many years and continues to be fascinated by them: why they abuse; how they abuse; what works to help them stop abusing their partners. Because she believes it necessary to help their victims when possible, Ms. Coté also gathers information from the victims: What really happened? Who did she believe him to be?  What behaviors did he display prior to the abuse; What were the contributing factors? What are the victim’s hopes and needs? How were the children impacted by her partner’s abuse of her?

Ms. Coté will share relevant, sometimes poignant, anecdotes and insights that will enhance your assessments, treatment, and treatment recommendations (Castelyn, 2017; Huffine, 2021), increasing the safety of adult and child victims and providing their abusers an opportunity to change.
